The Flow of a Power Law Fluid in a Melt Fed Single Screw Extruder

A simple numerical technique is proposed for the solution of the two-dimensional power-law move equations for a wide channel with a moving boundary. The results are used to create a complete model of the isothermal operation of a single-screw extruder with regard to the compression ratio, the relative lengths of the compression and the metering sections, and the power-laws index of the materials. It is shown that a number of the main features of screw extrusion happen to be predicted by the model. By method of examples it is found that, in program, the isothermal condition could be relaxed, and satisfactory correlation between the experiment and theory can be obtained, through an average extrusion heat. The model provides a wide theoretical framework, where the relative need for the geometric parameters and the power-rules index on the throughput-pressure qualities of the screw extrusion could be examined, and the experimental effects collated and extrapolated. Examples of the perfect solution is are single screw extruders presented by means of contour plots to aid designers and users of single-screw pumping machines.
